Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained active.
